ARTIST GODWIN LAUS
I use the world around me to try and capture a place of interior emotions, rather than exterior narrative. I am interested in psychological states, what it is to be human. My works are sparse but charged, although never dramatic — as though something has just happened, or is about to. Landscape in my practice isn’t scenery. Water, cliffs, horizons, ritual gestures — they become metaphors for emotional thresholds. Silence is not absence; it’s pressure.
There’s restraint. I don’t overcrowd the canvas. Space does as much work as form. I don’t try to tell the viewer what to feel — they’re placed in a state with total autonomy regarding how to react.
Figures, when present, aren’t portraits of personal identity, they stand in for states of being — witness, exile, celebrant, edge-dweller. Silence becomes a material element — dense, active, and directional. Through reduction and control, I aim for atmospheres that invite prolonged contemplation rather than immediate resolution.
